Job Title:                    Bi-Fuel Systems Engineer (Mechanical, Electrical)

Reports to:                 Director of Engineering – Alternative Fuels

Purpose:                    Working in a team environment, responsible for completion of engine Calibrations and Engine Systems Performance Data Generation for specific models for customer specific off-highway trucks, locomotives and related equipment and projects.  Specializing in ultra-class mining haul trucks.

Location:                    Novi, Michigan corporate headquarters.

Overview:                    The DHTE Group LLC along with its Tier-1 Suppliers have developed a LCNG/Diesel engine Bi-Fuel system- for Locomotives and Heavy  Duty Off Highway vehicles

Duration:                    This is contract position or short term assignment of 4-6 months expected at this time; may be extended based on program requirements.


  • Must be familiar with Diesel Engine / Dual Fuel Applications
  • Knowledge of CAN network and communications protocol such as J1939, J1708 and CAN OPEN
  • Micro Controllers and Calibration Development (Diesel – Dual Fuel)
  • Work at customer sites to validate operation and performance of various electrical controlling subsystems including display systems, as well as start-up, shut-down and safety systems.
  • Develop, document and control issuance of truck and truck control related software, using various programming languages
  • Develop applications of controls, instruments, systems and specifications for components to the truck operating environment. This requires an understanding of the operating logic schemes, including protection schemes, and truck operating safety provisions.
  • Maintain the documentation system for software or component application that supports records for further development, and operation and field maintenance.
  • Collaborates with other engineering personnel in designs; fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and determines methods, procedures, and conditions for testing products.
  • Create and maintain a documentation system that tracks software and schematic releases and organizes them for utilization for both engineering and field technicians.
  • Primarily responsible for leading the engine performance development and fuel systems calibration of the Diesel – LCNG Bi – Fuel system on the engine dynamometer as well as in-vehicle performance.
  • Engine development of will involve DHTE’s Dual-Fuel system on an engine dynamometer in China. Generate engine calibrations that meet project targets and customer acceptance with participation from Controls Engineers, Vehicle Engineers, and others.  Will be involved in all elements of the product development process, from idea generation through engineering support of products in the field. Will participate in and/or lead DFMEA, Validation and other development activities as well.

    ·    Responsible for designing and undertaking engine and vehicle calibration activity
    ·    Leads the development of engines, component calibrations, and optimization
    ·    Accurately acquires and processes data; maintains records of all test results
    ·    Configures transient test cycles for customer acceptance testing
    ·    Create and implement engine test plans to generate optimal LCNG substitution rates
    ·    Contribute to and present concepts, design, test plans, schedules, and data
    ·    Work on current engineering-related product issues and provide engineering support

  •  Generate engine calibrations (based upon Fuel Substitution Mapping) that meets the project targets for BSFC and Engine Power Performance.
  • Work with Controls (Hardware and Software) Engineers, to develop open-loop algorithms for
  • Mine Haul Trucks and Locomotives as defined in the program systems specifications
  • Must Be familiar with J 1939 CAN Bus Communications
  • Microprocessor Control Software and development tools such as INCA / ETAS , MAT Lab, etc.


  • For Designer positions, an Associate’s Degree in CAD or Engineering is required, with minimum of 3 years’ experience in a related position.
  • For Engineering positions, a Bachelor’s degree or better, in an Engineering related field, with minimum of 3 years’ experience in a related position.
  • Degree requirements may be waived for relevant work and industry experience.
  • 3-5 years experienced in SolidWorks or AutoCAD 2D drawings and 3D modeling is required
  • Ability to read and understand complex engineering drawings and documents
  • Excellent oral and written language and communication skills
  • Working knowledge of ISO and DIN standards
  • Experience with ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and under tight deadlines
  • Ability to work well in a diverse, multi-cultural environment
  • Ability to work flexible hours when needed.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • The flexibility and willingness to learn new software as needed


  • Specific experience in ultra-class haul trucks ranging from 100-400 ton, other mobile equipment, off-highway trucking, military vehicles, specialty vehicles, or locomotive experience is preferred.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering or related fields
  • Experience in a manufacturing, machining or fabricating environment
  • Chinese language skills a plus, bi-lingual skills a plus any language


  • A valid Driver’s License
  • Valid work eligibility.


  • A valid passport is required, or the ability to obtain one within 30 days.
  • Domestic and/or international travel could happen up to 15% of work (1-2 trips per year Is a possibility)
  • Ability to obtain a China visa is required.
